How to book
- Book online on an English booking site such as kosokubus.com or Bushikaku, or on each operator's own site.
- For a night bus, pick the boarding date, which is the day BEFORE you arrive in Kyoto (leaving Friday night means choosing Friday).
- Keep the e-ticket or booking number on your phone; staff check your name and booking number when you board.
- Arrive about 15 minutes early. Large terminals like Busta Shinjuku have many gates, so check the departure board.
Common mistakes
- Wrong date: the 23:00 bus on the 10th arrives on the morning of the 11th. Many people book the 11th and miss the bus.
- 4-across seats are cheap but tight. Light sleepers should choose 3-across seats (each seat stands alone).
- You arrive in Kyoto around 6 a.m., before hotel check-in. Leave luggage in a coin locker or at the hotel and start sightseeing.
- Many buses use same-gender seating: enter the correct gender for each passenger when booking.
Compared with the train
The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, but a one-way ticket starts at about ¥13,000. For two people, the night bus saves over ¥20,000 plus a night of hotel.
